Defiance, Ohio detail new album “Midwestern Minutes” and post a new song!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

No Idea Records has announced the details for the new studio album from Defiance, Ohio. The album is titled “Midwestern Minutes” and was recorded this past March and April by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording Studio in the band’s hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. Bridavsky also produced the band’s critically acclaimed previous album “The Fear, The Fear, The Fear,” released by No Idea Records in late 2007.

The 11-song album will be released on LP/CD via No Idea Records on July 6th 2010.

You can check out an early leak of the track “Hairpool” on the band’s No Idea Records profile page.

The band is currently booking an extensive US tour starting in June. Dates will be announced shortly.

Bassist/vocalist Ryan Woods offered a brief communiqué from the studio:

“I’m not sure what it will turn out like, but I do feel it is a bit of a change. I think we were a lot more careful in arranging the songs, for example, a lot more thought-out harmonies, some songs have lots of strings, some none at all. There is a lot more use of the piano, a Wurlitzer, and a return of the upright bass on some songs. A couple of the songs are quite theatrical in content and orchestrated musically. In contrast, I think a couple songs are also more “punk” sounding than the last record. We are very excited! I feel like we really worked as a group to make the songs and I think it will be a really good representation of where we are as a band now, for better or for worse.”

Defiance Oho have released three previous albums: “Share What Ya Got,” “The Great Depression,” and “The Fear, The Fear, The Fear.” All can be ordered through No Idea Records. You can click “more” below for the album credits and track listing.

The Blacklist Royals give away bonus track for charity donation to victims of mine disaster!

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Nashville, TN’s The Blacklist Royals are giving away a download of their song “Church Bells Are Ringing” and asking for donations to help raise money for the families affected by the recent Upper Big Branch Coal Mine tragedy in West Virginia. You can head over to the Paper + Plastick website to download the song and make a donation.

The band had this to say about the song and why they want to help the families:

“I wrote this song when we were in the studio recording “Semper Liberi,” so we decided to lay it down and throw it on the album as a secret track. It’s about the Sago Mine disaster that happened a few years ago in West Virginia. Thirteen people died, and to make things worse, in all the confusion the media initially reported that twelve of them had survived when really only one had made it out with his life. I based the song on the survivor’s account of what happened and on my own personal experience watching it all unfold on television.

Rob, Alex, and I all have family from West Virginia and I lived there for most of my life. In light of the tragedy at the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine, we thought we should put this song up for charity download to try and contribute to the money being raised to help aid the families of the most recent victims of an industry which has always unapologetically put profit and productivity far before the safety of their workers.

Even the smallest contribution helps, and believe me, these people need all they can get.”

The band previously leaked three new songs, “California” via Reax Magazine and “American Hearts” & “Rock N Roll” on their MySpace page. All three songs come from the band’s upcoming album “Semper Liberi,” which will be released on vinyl and digital download May 25th via Paper + Plastick.

The band will be touring with label mates Coffee Project and Greenland is Melting next month, including a performance at Wilmington, NC’s Rad Fest. You can click “more” below for the dates!
