CoCoComa released their second LP Things Are Not All Right earlier this year on Memphis’s infamous Goner Records, home to other garage rock titans like Jay Reatard, Ty Segall, Box Elders, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and many others. The record has already garnered considerable praise from critics, some of who have said:

“Forget blitzkriegs, CoCoComa’s Things Are Not All Right is the real all-out assault. […] This is garage rock on an entirely new and bountiful level. Blink and you might miss the drunken genius of Cococoma, but take them in and you’ll probably be left blinking in surprise for days anyway.” – Skope Magazine

“A word of free advice: Any bands out there considering making a record that lands anywhere along the fairly lengthy (yet somehow narrow) gamut of garage/punk/power pop/rock, do it this way. On their sophomore full-length for Goner Records, Chicago quartet CoCoComa offer what is essentially a blueprint for how to create a loud, melodic, built-to-last punk record. […] Things Are Not All Right bursts with simple, well-crafted tunes that walk a fine edge between sweet and sour; garage and glam; gritty and glossy. They’re delivered with an urgency and directness that practically dares other bands to come up with something so impossibly simple and dead on.” – Dusted

“With bursting pop mayhem, this reminds me of the Lookout roster of years gone by, like the Pattern, albeit with a tad bit of Cheap Trick as well, like huge hooks, marshaled drums, and tight tunefulness. […] This stuff is hectic, unpretentious, lacking that winking irony, and actually full-throttle fun — just an organic heap of all things righteous and rollicking.” – Left of the Dial

“Simply put: this record is at once both a riot and thoughtful. Now, fun is not something typically associated with ‘mature’ songwriting. But CoCoComa has managed to record these ten tracks with a youthfulness that gives life to their adult writing perspective. They keep the formula simple and the hooks catchy.” – Buddyhead

NOBUNNY hops along with Jay Reatard, stampedes through Europe with friends!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

nb_blogThe notorious lone rabbit known as NOBUNNY has recently divulged the rest of his (it’s?) tour plans for 2009. After a grueling solo crawl across the desert to Memphis’s Gonerfest 6, the misunderstood coney will join up with Jay Reatard, Hunx & His Punx, Box Elders, and Digital Leather for the Shattered Records Tour through the northeast, then skip the country for a week in Europe with The Okmoniks and Rock n’ Roll Adventure Kids, and finally hop back across the pond for the final dates of the Shattered Records Tour. You can click “more” below for the dates!

Following this harrowing regimen, the exhausted cottontail will take the rest of the year off to focus on recording the follow-up to his critically acclaimed “Love Visions,” released late last year courtesy of 1234GO Records. The new album, tentatively titled “ONO,” is scheduled for release by Goner Records within the first half of 2010.

Last year’s “Love Visions” earned considerable ire and admiration from critics alike:

“How does this 25-minutes of sick trash even exist?” – Buddyhead.com

“It was disgusting, totally disgusting, and more than a little creepy.” – Paste Magazine

“(If) you like sweaty basements with your friends while drinking beer from the cheap 30 packs you all threw in on, then this could be your favorite album for the rest of the summer.” – Racket Magazine

“NOBUNNY played… he was hands down the sexiest thing we’d seen.” – Vice.com

“I believe in NOBUNNY. He appears to feel the rock strongly” – Rev. Norb

CoCoComa leak two new songs from their upcoming new album on Goner Records!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

CococomaChicago’s garage-pop brain trust CoCoComa have posted two new songs that will appear on their forthcoming second album, “Things Are Not All Right,” care of Memphis’s Goner Records, former home of Jay Reatard and currently of Box Elders, Ty Segall, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and many others.

You can check out “Enemies” and “It Won’t Be Long” on their MySpace page.

In their short lifetime, the band has garnered considerable admiration from critics:

“CoCoComa’s songs sound rowdy and loose—the band’s reckless, infectious enthusiasm makes them feel like they could run off the rails at any time, even on a recording.” – Chicago Reader

“If the carnival had a carousel that had vibrating rockets instead of bobbing ponies, Rumplemintz and PBR instead of Icees, and roller coasters that rattled more than the Cyclone in a hurricane, then the music wouldn’t just be a pipe organ wheezing calliope music—it’d be the fucked-up, off-the-rails, fast-as-you-can pumping of CoCoComa. Start with the guitar / drum spazzing of Bill and Lisa Roe, whirl in a mad dash of Mike Fitzpatrick’s organ anchor, coat with Bill’s shredding lead vocals, sprinkle with the “whoah-oh-oh”s and group shouting that only comes with the unabashed embracing of being sweaty and dirty for the sake of a good time, and you’ve got CoCoComa.” – RCRDLBL.COM

“Although the tempos often approach hardcore speed (a positive… ain’t knockin’ it!), the overall vibe is that of a modern take on the wildest ‘60s rave-ups. The fat has been trimmed offa each of these tunes, leaving an LP comprised solely of 2 minute stomp’n’shouters. Being loud and wild can take you a long way, but it’s clear that COCOCOMA is actually capable of crafting some catchy songs around the bombast, which is what elevates this LP frombeing merely decent to pretty goddamn good.” – Maximum Rock n’ Roll

Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s debut “S/T” LP re-issued in the US by Goner Records!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

ecsr_cover_blogMemphis’s overlords of the garage rock resurgence, Goner Records, have just re-issued Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s self-titled debut album for the first time in the United States.

Tracked in only four hours on a Saturday afternoon in 2006, the album was originally released on Australia’s Dropkick Records, with very few imports making their way across the pond. After the infectious success of 2008’s “Primary Colors,” Goner saw fit to give the self-titled album a proper release stateside.

The band is currently hosting two songs from the album, “Get Up Morning” and “Precious Rose,” over on their MySpace page.

A full track listing can be seen below.

1. Get Up Morning
2. Cool Ice Cream
3. Pitch A Tent
4. Having a Hard Time
5. Yo-yo Man
6. Do My Thing
7. Precious Rose
8. Insufficient Funds
9. Winter’s Warm
10. It’s All Square
11. Turn Your Page

The band draws their name from the small copper rings found on electrical transformers, including those used at the vinyl pressing plant where two of the members are employed. Their lo-fi recordings and stripped-down song structures paired with animated live sets have earned them frequent comparisons to The Stooges as well as other garage titans like Wire, Jay Reatard, and The Fall.

You can expect them to hit the continental states sometime in early 2010, so get your lampshades and dancing shoes ready. In the mean time, you can read what a few critics had to say about 2008’s Primary Colors.

“The best fun house since Fun House… Iggy would approve.” – Alternative Press

“Three-plus decades after the initial dispensation, one more punk band out of the blue (Melbourne, but it could be anywhere in the English-speaking world) does the same thing punk bands have always done, only not exactly plus it sounds like they just thought of it last week, three days after they started practicing in the bassist’s basement. Off-key chants, minimal chords, spare arrangements, into confusion rather than rage from ‘long-term memory loss’ to ‘a little bit of kissing and a whole lot of hugging.’ Some are no longer susceptible to this recurrent miracle. Too bad for them.” – MSN

“The Australian quartet works with the basics to produce a simple, hooky garage punk racket, yet delivers a surprisingly multi-layered mixture when everything is said and done.” – DUSTED
