Punknews.org is leaking a stream of the entire new studio album from HIGH DIVE. The new three-piece Queer punk band from Ryan Woods of Defiance, Ohio.
You can stream the self-titled debut that was released on LP/CD via No Idea Records last month here.
Last month, No Idea Records gave away a free MP3 download from the album.
You can download the song “Tennessee” for free here.
You can order the album from No Idea, or purchase from iTunes here.
The 10 track album was recorded at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN with Mike Bridavsky. “This is where Defiance, Ohio and lots of other Bloomington based bands record”, says Mr. Woods. “We are good friends with Mike, he is very good at what he does. We felt very comfortable with him. It was important to us to make this record very simply. We had played the songs a lot so we wanted to just be really ready. In the end it was all recorded in one session and mixed the next day. We are really happy with how it all worked out”.
Ryan commented on the inspiration for starting yet another musical outlet outside of Defiance, Ohio:
“For years, Theo Hilton (Defiance, Ohio + Nana Grizol) and I had found it
difficult to talk about the issues of being queer in our songs. It was something that was really important to us. Toby Foster seemed to have a real strength for expressing his feelings on those topics with his music. We had known Nick Romy for years and as soon as we played the few songs we had already written, it seemed to click into place. We all found a greater voice for speaking about our experiences being queer, while being influenced and excited by the energy of some of our good friends’ three piece pop-punk bands like Songs for Moms, The Max Levine Ensemble, Delay and Vacation.”

Dear Landlord recently recorded a new song for a compilation that former Lookout Records owner, Larry Livermore, is putting together titled The Thing That Ate Larry Livermore. The band recorded with Matt Alison and Justin Yates at Atlas Studios in Chicago.
In other Dear Landlord news, the band will be closing out 2011 with a string of shows, playing with Banner Pilot, The Slow Death, The Dopamines, and Direct Hit.
You can view show info and purchase tickets below.
This year Dear Landlord recorded two new songs for a split 7″ with The Dopamines which was released by Paper + Plastick.
Dear Landlord recently played FEST 10 in Gainesville, Florida to a packed 1,600 capacity venue!
Check out some quite nice footage of them playing their classic “Three To The Beach” here.
If you still haven’t heard the mind-bogglingly infectious album, Dream Homes, you can still stream the entire album on the band’s PUNKNEWS.ORG band profile. The record was released in 2009 on LP/CD courtesy of No Idea Records.
Dear Landlord consists of Zack (Guitar/Vocals) and Brad (Drums), formerly of Minneapolis pop-punk legends Rivethead. Zack also plays in House Boat and was in Off With Their Heads (still is maybe?), while Brad also plays in The Gateway District and The San Diego Chargers. Brett (Bass/Vocals) and Adam (Guitar/Vocals) also pull double-duty in power-pop staples, The Copyrights.

Extremely nice words about Dear Landlord:
“Solid songwriting and powerful group choruses make this one a winner.” -AMP Magazine
“They’re a great mix of nostalgia and fresh ideas.” -Rocksound
“Punchy, fast, and tuneful as hell, the Illinois quartet evoke memories of pop-punk past.” -Rocksound
“Super energetic pop-punk with gruff vocals – just how I like them.” -Cole Faulkner of thepunksite.com
“It’s safe to say that the energy exerted is just as powerful on Dream Homes as it was live.” -Punknews.org
“Dream Homes is definitely pretty in its almost patentable punk pop, but it’s not fully domesticated. It’d be a mistake to take familiarity of their sound for granted.” -Todd of Razorcake
HAWKS AND DOVES is the solo project/concept from the dark hole that is former Planes Mistaken For Stars front man, Gared O’Donnell’s soul! Gared had a very crappy year. Essentially, his band broke up, he got divorced, and life pretty much took a dump on him. Apparently, all that misery combined with anxiety attacks and excessive drinking make you want to escape your nightmarish existence, so Gared came to Gainesville to “record his solo album”. While he was here, he was befriended/rescued by guitar/bass maestro Chad “Malibu” Darby (Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves). Along the way, George Rebelo (Hot Water Music) inadvertently got roped into the late night writing process. Other supporting players include the illustrious Jon Gaunt (Chuck Ragan’s Fiddle man), Matt Radick, and Chris Wollard (Hot Water Music). The resulting album entitled Year One, is as melancholy as it is depressing. It also features the most blatant Motown/Afghan Whigs bites of Gared’s fabulous musical career. To say that there are pop nuggets lurking within this seething document of a life collapsing on itself is an understatement. This is Mr. O’Donnell at his most honest and transparent. Despite it all, Year One is a cathartic and genuinely uplifting experience.
Year One finally got to see the light of day and into the people’s hands on 10/28/11 on LP at the annual NO IDEA parking lot sale during FEST 10. The CD version is still waiting in the wings.
Thanks to the long-standing support of all things Gared from ROCKSOUND we are pleased to share with the masses a stream of the entire HAWKS AND DOVES album.
Click here to enjoy the music and read a track-by-track explanation from Mr. O’Donnell.
On a side note, while Gared was in Gainesville expelling his demons to tape, he also fell in love with a beautiful woman. She packed her belongings and followed him to Chicago. The two live there quite happily and will be getting married soon. Misery can turn into beauty when you least expect it.
HAWKS AND DOVES are currently building a live band around O’Donnell and Darby with plans to tour everywhere this spring. We will keep you updated as things shape up.
Gared O’Donnell was the front man for Planes Mistaken For Stars. Planes released five albums on various labels (No Idea Records, Deep Elm, Abacus) from 1997 -2008 before breaking up. They did a reunion show in 2010 at THE FEST 9 in Gainesville, Fl.
