Mike Hale could easily be considered an institution of the Gainesville music scene, a stalwart member of the long standing “Old Guard” who lived and breathed the steamy, smoke-filled air of The Hardback Cafe. Despite the straight-to-hell mentality of the time, the decade of Gainesvillean debauchery managed to spawn some of the most gifted songwriters in the last ten years of punk rock; luminaries like Hot Water Music, Against Me!, and Gunmoll.

Nowadays some might say these folks are getting a bit long in the fangs, and while it’s undeniable that we all mellow with age, musically speaking this often turns out for the better. The reckless abandon of youth is calmed, turning furious anthems into carefully-crafted songs, moving once-broken vocal chords to stretch and hit melodic notes, and soothing formerly frantic guitar riffs into confident chops. In the Red, led forth by best friends Mike and Matt, manage to unify the nostalgic rhythms we all call home with a youthful vigor generally reserved for those many years younger, presenting it with superb production to create a powerful record that instantly places itself in league with those by their old friends.

Future Plans: Immediately prior to recording “Volume 2,” In the Red hit the studio to record an acoustic version of their debut album, “Volume 1,” which will be released in the coming months as a series of four 7”s care of Suburban Home. They already have tours tentatively planned to hit the entire US again in July and October, and are hoping to round out 2009 and enter a new decade with a wintertime European Tour in December/January.
