“Who are The Spits? Where did they come from? Details are sparse and incomplete at best. Squirming and writhing their way out of obscurity with the tact of a glue-sniffing gremlin, The Spits have survived and thrived in an age of looming uncertainty. Much like an escalating prank war, what may have begun as innocent fun has grown contorted by threats of looming worldwide annihilation and impending social collapse. Warheads will fly as the Armageddon Clock strikes midnight. When the dust settles and the survivors emerge from their fallout shelters, pasty flesh and squinting eyes burning in the dustbowl sun, a motley crew of disfigured mutants will appear on the horizon. A mirage? Not likely. Knock the dust off your stereo and fire up your chainsaw, throw on The Spits and prepare for hell on earth.” – Cam, Southern Lovin’
“Fresh from the depths of Swami Studios alongside legendary production warlock John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Night Marchers, etc.) and Portland’s Red Lantern Studios, THE SPITS are showing no sign of slowing down with their fourth self-titled LP. Mixing equal parts Devo and Misfits into an aurally addictive, synth-inflected stew, they describe the music they play as “Punk for the People.” These prophets of the proletariat have a message for the masses: THE SPITS are the soundtrack to the post-apocalyptic future.
THE SPITS have never shied away from esoteric subject matter lyrically, delivering previous records rife with themes of escaped Nazi war criminals, nuclear winters, commie spies, and terrorist attacks, coupled with back alley booze-fests, brain-bruising bong rips, skateboards, and fisticuffs. With songs about constable evasion, Huxley-esque visions of futuristic metropolitan horror and alien abduction, “SPITS IV” should prove to be just as desperately disparate and sonically sordid as previous salvos. In short: unlike a lot of the bands in the contemporary punk scene, THE SPITS are fun.
For the uninitiated, THE SPITS are a punk rock band hailing from Seattle by way of Michigan. The brothers Wood (Sean and Erin) play guitar and bass respectively, with Lance Phelps banging away on the drums. While the drums and synth have seen live line-up changes in the past, in recent years a constant with the band has been the studio collaboration between the Woods and Phelps.
From the fuzzed out, over-driven guitar and vox intro of “Tonight” and the percussive submachine gun attack of “Police” to the cool bottom heaviness of “Life of Crime” and the lo-fi outro of “Flags,” THE SPITS fourth offering is their strongest to date; showcasing a band that is only beginning to approach the zenith of its power, as the world dips entropically past its own towards obliteration. Indeed. Buy the record, take the ride.” – Shawn Durant
TOUR: The band will be taking their mayhem to the road in early September of 2009 for a coast to coast trek from their hometown of Seattle to New York City, followed by a ramble down the West Coast in October and loose plans to lay seige upon Europe by Spring of 2010.
