Album Title: “Bridge”
Release Date: October 2008
Label: Suburban Home Records
The voice of Joey Cape evokes a recognition and comforting familiarity in all of his recording endeavors, due largely in part to our fondness for So-Cal legends Lagwagon. Having had quite a busy year, releasing material with Lagwagon, The Playing Favorites, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, “Bridge” definitively showcases Cape’s talents as a songwriter and musician.
Written over the course of four years, “Bridge” is truly a milestone in the songwriter’s career. While five songs from Lagwagon’s recent effort, “I Think My Older Brother Use to Listen to Lagwagon,” appear on “Bridge,” the listener should take note that these are the songs in their original form, as they were first written on Cape’s acoustic guitar. Gone are songs like Lagwagon classics “Beer Goggles” and “Razor Burn.” In their place are somber and, at times, keyboard-laden tunes of true love and nostalgic memoirs of younger years.
First time listeners will discover a deeply talented musician in the truest sense, while long-time Lagwagon fans will discover that Cape has grown up with them over the course of the past 16 years. With “Bridge,” Cape further establishes his signature voice and sound for this generation as Cash, Waits, and Strummer did for theirs.
